Si la inmoral disparidad en la distribución de las vacunas no te indigna,
la grave amenaza que ello representa para el mundo sí lo debería.

¿Qué se necesita para VOW?

Si queremos librar al mundo del COVID-19, se debe vacunar al mundo ahora (VOW Vaccinate Our World). Y planteamos que se acelere el proceso mediante las siguientes acciones:

  • Recaudar $100,000 millones de dólares, cifra que permitiría asegurar suficientes dosis para vacunar todos los países ahora.
  • Adquirir 7,000 millones de vacunas contra el COVID-19 en un plazo de un año para todos los ciudadanos del mundo, particularmente para personas de países en vías de desarrollo.
  • Anular o suspender todas las patentes de las vacunas contra el COVID-19 durante la emergencia mundial de salud pública.
  • Eliminar todas las restricciones al intercambio de información y datos sobre la pandemia; se necesita una transparencia del 100%.
  • Promover la cooperación internacional, y no los intereses políticos, como la fuerza determinante para acabar con la pandemia.

Si queremos garantizar la equidad en la distribución de las vacunas, el mundo debe de:

Comprometer $100,000 millones con el fin de procurar las vacunas suficientes para inocular el mundo entero. Los líderes del G20 e instituciones financieras globales, como el Fondo Monetario Internacional y el Banco Mundial, deben prometer intensificar sus contribuciones inmediatamente.

Aún aumentando la producción actual de vacunas al máximo nivel, los fabricantes de vacunas no pueden satisfacer la demanda de dosis contra el COVID-19 que salvarán vidas. Si el mundo quiere luchar esta y futuras pandemias, se debe aumentar la producción de vacunas en cada continente. Simplemente no se puede depender de unas cuantas de empresas farmacéuticas para vacunar al mundo entero.

Las vacunas contra el COVID-19 están financiadas principalmente por los contribuyentes, con recursos públicos, no por las empresas farmacéuticas. Debemos hacer un llamado a todos los fabricantes de vacunas para que compartan abiertamente la tecnología y propiedad intelectual; y que los gobiernos garanticen que las vacunas contra el COVID-19 sean declaradas un bien público. Podemos ver ejemplos del pasado, como la epidemia del sida, y salvar al mundo como lo hicimos con los medicamentos antirretrovirales contra el VIH.

Debemos abogar por un mandato exigible para garantizar la transparencia y rendición de cuentas de todos los países y organizaciones cuando se trata de la salud pública mundial.

La mayor parte de las adquisiciones de vacunas se han llevado a cabo mediante negociaciones a puerta cerrada entre los distintos gobiernos y empresas farmacéuticas de los cuales se revela poca información sobre los detalles de los acuerdos, lo cual aumenta los costos de las vacunas. Durante esta y cualquier otra pandemia, todos los acuerdos sobre vacunas deben hacerse públicamente para fomentar una mayor cooperación y garantizar que todos los países puedan acceder a medicamentos y vacunas a precios razonables.

Muchas naciones, entre ellas Canadá, Estados Unidos, el Reino Unido, y la Unión Europea han comprado suficientes vacunas para vacunar a sus poblaciones varias veces. Ante una escasez mundial, se debe obligar a estos países a compartir sus excedentes de vacunas. En un momento en que la mayor parte del mundo tiene poco acceso a las vacunas, las naciones deben establecer un esquema de trabajo que garantice que el resto del mundo también pueda protegerse. Si un país no está a salvo del COVID-19, nadie más lo está.

Of the nearly 10 billion vaccine doses administered worldwide, only 9.5% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose, compared to 85% and 75% of people in Canada and the U.S., respectively.
